Permanent Instant Asset Write-Off: What It Means for Small Business
For years, small business owners have navigated one of the more frustrating features of Australian tax planning: the instant asset write-off that kept disappearing.
Each Budget brought another extension, another modification, another deadline.
That uncertainty ends now.
What’s been announced
The Government has confirmed that the $20,000 instant asset write-off will be made permanent from 2026–27.
Eligible small businesses will be able to immediately deduct the full cost of qualifying assets below the threshold, rather than depreciating them over several years.
Equipment. Tools. Technology upgrades. Office assets. Vehicles used for business purposes.
If the asset costs less than $20,000 and your business is eligible, the deduction happens now — not spread across years.
Why permanence matters
The value of this measure isn’t just the deduction itself.
It’s the certainty.
Good tax planning works best when you can make commercial decisions without wondering whether the rules will change next year. Permanence means you can invest in the equipment and tools your business genuinely needs, confident the tax treatment will remain consistent.
Like reinforcing your foundations before the busy season, certainty lets you build with confidence rather than hesitation.
A couple of things to keep in mind
Eligibility requirements apply — including turnover thresholds and the nature of the asset.
And as always, a tax deduction should follow a sound commercial decision — not drive it.
But if you’ve been putting off equipment purchases waiting for certainty, that certainty has now arrived.
